Our US tungsten Investment Viking Mines (ASX: VKA | OTC: VKALF) sampled more high grade tungsten at two of its regional projects in Nevada.

VKA’s main asset is the Linka project - which was a previous tungsten producer (when ~123,000t at 0.54% tungsten was mined in the 1940s and 50s).

Mining only stopped on that project when the US government ended its tungsten buying program, which left stockpiles of mineralised material sitting at surface.

VKA is currently drilling that project right now, the first drilling in over 40 years.

The sampling results from this week were from VKA’s other regional assets.

Here is where they sit in Nevada, relative to other tungsten projects:

VKA’s sampling results were from two regional projects “Terrell” and “Long”.

Terrell which was an old underground tungsten mine returned rock chips with grades Sampling returned a loose surface rock grading 2.4% tungsten (full of coarse scheelite crystals), veins in the old mine up to 1.7%, and leftover crusher material at 0.4 to 0.5%:

Then Long, another historic tungsten mine.

Channel sampling across the old workings returned 1.8m @ 1.8% tungsten (including 0.45m at 2.7%), with grab samples showing that the mineralisation extends east of the old mine:

For context on grades - $2.2BN tungsten producer EQ Resources mined grades of just 0.11-0.16% last quarter from one of its project. (source)

What’s next for VKA?

🔄 VKA’s first drill programme at US tungsten project

Here are the milestones we are tracking for the drill programme:

  • ✅ Earthworks
  • ✅ Drill rig mobilisation to site
  • Drilling starts - visuals have been reported (source)
  • 🔄 Assay results (should start to land in September/October) (source)

Here is the drilling plan from the drilling underway:

You can see our Deep Dive leading into the drilling here: VKA to start drilling for tungsten in the US any day now...?

🔄 VKA’s rapid restart plan

We also want to see VKA progress its rapid mine restart strategy.

Here are the milestones we are tracking on that front:

  • ✅ Assay results from stockpiles + tailings dam
  • ✅ Processing study results
  • 🔄 Metwork optimisation (Ore sorting + flotation testwork). Continuing to optimise processing choices
  • 🔲 Updates on the Bulk ore collection, transport, processing and results

🔄 US engagement

This is more of a corporate milestone we want to see VKA hit.

It’s hard to predict when any of these might happen, but we are hoping VKA can attract some sort of US government funding to help finance its project AND/OR attract strategic interest from inside the US.
